Chiesa di San Pietro a Coppito

The Chiesa di San Pietro a Coppito is a 13th-century Gothic church in L'Aquila with a white stone facade featuring vertical pilasters and horizontal cornices. Two Roman marble lions flank the entrance portal, and the building is crowned by an octagonal bell tower.

Construction began in 1257 when residents of Coppito castle built this structure as a gathering place for the newly established city of L'Aquila. The octagonal bell tower was added in 1280 and has defined the city skyline since then.

The interior displays medieval frescoes showing Saint George and a notable wall painting of Saint Louis King by Antonio Cavaretto. These artworks reveal the religious devotion and artistic skill of the medieval community.

The building sustained significant damage in the 2009 earthquake and underwent extensive restoration before reopening to visitors. It is worth checking ahead for specific visiting hours or guided tour availability.

The octagonal bell tower houses bells cast in 2018 by traditional foundries from Agnone. These modern additions were created using centuries-old casting techniques.
