Between the 10th and 11th centuries, the Soarzi family established the fortress, which later passed to the Franzesi family and the Florentine Republic in 1361.
Located on the Via Francigena pilgrimage route, the castle served as a strategic point for managing resources and providing supplies to medieval travelers.
The castle operates daily with guided tours, though winter hours are reduced to afternoons on Mondays and Fridays, making advance reservations necessary.
The castle maintains a falconry center where visitors can observe and interact with various birds of prey during scheduled demonstrations throughout the year.
