Fortezza di Poggio Imperiale

Fortezza di Poggio Imperiale is a five-sided fortress built on a hilltop outside Poggibonsi, with stone walls wrapping around the summit and defensive towers at key positions. Inside the perimeter, different areas now house exhibition spaces and storage for historical materials.

The fortress was built between 1488 and 1511 as part of a strategic project to control the passage connecting two rival cities in central Italy. It served as a military base during a period of regional competition for power and resources.

The site functions today as a learning space where universities and schools use its archives and displays to understand medieval times. When you walk through the rooms, you can sense how daily life unfolded within these walls.

The fortress is reachable on foot from Poggibonsi town center by following directional signs, with parking available near the main gate. Wear comfortable shoes for the walk uphill, as the terrain can be steep in places.

Beneath the structure lies a network of underground passages, including a specialized tunnel designed to detect tunneling attempts by attackers. This sophisticated defense system reveals how seriously the protection of this position was taken.
