Santa Croce in Fossabanda, Medieval convent and church in Pisa, Italy
Santa Croce in Fossabanda is a convent and church complex in Pisa featuring a single-hall church interior divided by cross vaults. The complex also contains a large cloister displaying Renaissance architectural elements.
The complex was founded in 1324 building upon 13th-century structures, before Bartolomeo da Cantone reshaped it. The site was later transferred to the Franciscan order.
The church displays a painting of the enthroned Madonna with musician angels, created by Portuguese artist Alvaro Pirez di Evora in the 15th century. This work reflects artistic connections between southern European regions during that period.
The complex is located at Piazza Santa Croce in Fossabanda and is easily accessible from Pisa's main streets. Multiple restaurants and accommodations are found in the immediate surroundings.
The name Fossabanda comes from an 11th-century drainage canal commissioned by Bando to improve the formerly marshy area. This waterway shaped the development of the entire neighborhood.
