Battistero di San Pietro, Baptistry and church in central Asti, Italy
The Battistero di San Pietro consists of four connected buildings, including a square church, a rotunda with a tower, and a cloister from medieval times.
The construction began in the 12th century under Bishop Landolfo da Vergiate, drawing inspiration from the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem following the First Crusade.
The church displays sandstone reliefs from the 12th century and terracotta decorations depicting human figures, vegetation, and symbolic objects on windows.
The complex contains a marble baptismal font from the 16th century and currently houses the Archaeological and Paleontological Museum of Asti.
This religious structure served as the headquarters of the Gerosolimitano Priory, which managed numerous hospitals across Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy, and Emilia regions.
