Cimitero dei Cappuccini, Historical burial catacombs in Palermo, Italy.
The underground passages of this cemetery contain over 8000 preserved bodies arranged in corridors according to gender, profession, and social status.
The catacombs began in 1599 when Capuchin monks needed additional burial space, starting with Brother Silvestro of Gubbio as the first entombed body.
Families maintained their deceased relatives through financial contributions, ensuring proper preservation and placement within designated sections of the catacombs.
The catacombs remain at cold temperatures throughout the year, requiring visitors to bring appropriate clothing for the underground environment.
The preserved body of Rosalia Lombardo, who died in 1929 at age two, displays remarkable preservation through specialized embalming techniques.
