Città Vecchia

Città Vecchia is the old district of Trieste, spreading across narrow streets and stone buildings that climb from the waterfront toward the San Giusto hill. The area is made up of closely packed houses with small squares and staircases interspersed throughout.

The quarter shows structures from Roman times and medieval buildings that prove Trieste has been continuously inhabited since ancient days. Archaeological evidence from different periods reveals that this place has been occupied and developed for over two millennia.

The neighborhood contains several religious buildings from different faiths, showing how Trieste served as a diverse trading center where various communities coexisted. You can see these structures scattered throughout the old streets as silent witnesses to this shared past.

Visitors can reach the quarter on foot from Piazza Unità d'Italia and explore it through a network of pedestrian paths and staircases. The terrain is hilly, so wear comfortable shoes and be ready for climbing as you move through the streets.

The quarter preserves intact Roman ruins including a theater from the 1st century BC that seated around 6,000 spectators. This theater is one of the rare surviving examples of Roman entertainment buildings and gives visitors an unusual look into ancient times.
