Forte Preara, Military fort in Verona, Italy
The polygonal fortress stands on a hill north of Montorio Castle, positioned between Valpantena and Mizzole Valley, featuring defensive artillery positions.
Built between 1859 and 1860 under the Imperial Royal Office of Fortifications, the fort received its name from Baron Franz von John.
The fort represents a critical component of the Verona defensive system, demonstrating 19th-century military engineering and architectural principles.
The garrison accommodated 120 infantry and 20 artillerymen during wartime, with space for an additional 120 personnel in emergency situations.
The structure maintained three 9-centimeter rifled cannons and eight smoothbore cannons, supported by 46 barrels of gunpowder weighing 112 kilograms each.
