Eremo di Monte Giove, Camaldolese hermitage in Fano, Italy.
The eremo di Monte Giove is a Camaldolese monastery situated on a hilltop about 215 meters (705 feet) above sea level. From this elevated position, it overlooks the Metauro Valley and the Adriatic coastline.
The original structure was built in 1627 but had to be relocated due to ground instability. In 1741, the church was redesigned at its new location.
The octagonal church contains religious statues that were crafted by a sculptor from Rimini and shape how visitors experience the interior space. These artworks reflect the skilled craftsmanship that has long been important to this religious community.
The monastery is open to visitors Thursday through Sunday, with the library available by advance appointment. It is best to contact ahead if you wish to see the collections.
The monastery operates a traditional pharmacy at its entrance where herbal remedies are prepared following age-old methods. This craft practice is a rare continuation of medieval Camaldolese knowledge.
