Lago Garcia, lake in Sicily
Lago Garcia is a large reservoir in the Belice river valley situated about 198 meters above sea level. The water extends several kilometers with depths reaching over 40 meters, surrounded by gentle hills and green fields.
The dam was built in 1986 on the Belice River to store water for farming and surrounding villages. This creation transformed the landscape and became an essential resource for the local community.
The name Garcia comes from the original landowner where the dam was built. Today, the lake draws locals and visitors who come to observe wildlife and enjoy the quiet, making it a gathering place for those seeking peace away from towns.
The area is easily accessible by car from Palermo by following the main road southwest toward Sciacca and then toward Poggioreale, where parking is available at the dam. The open shoreline is suitable for walking, bird watching, and picnicking throughout the year.
Near the lake stands Rocca di Entella, a hill of white porous stone where the ancient city of Entella once stood centuries ago. The site features a cave system with passages about 700 meters long that visitors can explore, offering a window into Sicily's ancient past.
