Monument to the Belfiore Martyrs, Memorial sculpture in Mantua, Italy.

The Monument to the Belfiore Martyrs is a Carrara marble sculpture by Pasquale Miglioretti, consisting of a sarcophagus with relief medallions of the eleven martyrs, a pyramidal element, and a statue of the Genius of Humanity. A marble plaque on the base commemorates Attilio Mori, a conspirator who died on the night of 2 November 1851.

The monument was inaugurated on 7 December 1872 in Piazza Sordello, twenty years after the executions of Don Enrico Tazzoli, Carlo Poma, Bernardo Canal, Angelo Scarsellini and Giovanni Zambelli, which took place between 1851 and 1855 in Valletta Belfiore. It was desecrated and re-inaugurated on 5 June 1887. Dismantled in 1930, it was reassembled in the Belfiore gardens and inaugurated on 20 November 2002 by President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi.

The monument carries a Latin-inscribed plaque evoking the "Genius of Humanity" and a marble tablet honouring Attilio Mori, a conspirator who died the night of 2 November 1851. The eleven martyrs appear as relief medallions on the sarcophagus, so visitors read individual faces rather than a single allegorical figure.

The monument now stands in the gardens of the Belfiore valley, on the southern shore of Lake Superiore, the site of the 1851–1855 executions; a white Verona marble stele marks the exact spot. It was reassembled here in 2002, so it is not in Piazza Sordello, where the 1872 original stood until 1930. The sarcophagus relics are in the church of San Sebastiano and the Genius of Humanity statue in the Ducal Palace courtyard.

Each figure carved into the marble was shaped to represent one of the executed martyrs, with their different body poses and facial expressions telling individual stories. This personal approach transforms abstract ideas of sacrifice into something you grasp directly while looking at the stone.
