Monte Acellica, Mountain summit in Campania, Italy
Monte Acellica is a mountain summit in the Monti Picentini range, reaching 1,660 meters high with steep slopes throughout. Extensive beech forests cover the upper elevations and define the landscape.
The mountain served as a natural boundary between the provinces of Salerno and Avellino throughout history. This border role shaped how the surrounding territories were governed and organized over centuries.
The local names Céleca or Acéleca come from regional dialects and show the language of mountain communities in Campania. These traditional names are still used by people living in the surrounding villages.
Several marked trails run to the summit through forests with chestnut, beech, hornbeam, birch, lime, elm, and holm oak trees. Different routes offer varying levels of difficulty for hikers of all abilities.
The mountain contains springs that feed multiple rivers, including the Picentino, Tusciano, and Calore Irpino. The Calore Irpino is the largest tributary of the Volturno and plays an important role in supplying water to the broader region.
