Fortified city of Bergamo

The stone walls extend for 6 kilometers around the upper city of Bergamo, incorporating gates, towers, and underground tunnels within their structure.

The Republic of Venice constructed these fortifications between 1561 and 1588 to protect the western border of their territory from rival European powers.

The walls integrate military engineering with architectural elements, featuring four main gates that connect the upper medieval district to the modern lower city.

Visitors can walk along the entire perimeter of the walls on dedicated paths that offer views of both the Po Valley and the Alpine foothills.

The walls contain 14 bastions, 2 platforms, 100 embrasures for cannons, and 2 powder magazines, forming a complete military defense system.
