Rocca, Medieval fortress in Città Alta, Italy
The Rocca rises on Sant'Eufemia hill with a square keep, four corner towers, and a cylindrical tower. The structure offers views across Bergamo and the Po Valley.
Construction began in 1331 under John of Luxembourg as a medieval fortification. The Venetians later modified the structure, adding the round tower and establishing a school for bombardiers in 1455.
The Museum of the 19th Century housed in the fortress displays objects and documents from the Italian Risorgimento period and local military history. Visitors can see how this era shaped life in Bergamo.
The fortress is open daily with variable hours throughout the year for visitors. Guided tours and historical exhibitions are offered and suitable for people of all ages.
Archaeological excavations in the 1980s revealed Celtic settlements from the Iron Age and Roman ruins beneath the current structure. A Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter once stood on this location.
