The Museo della Palafitte is a history museum near Lake Ledro that focuses on prehistoric settlements along the shoreline. It displays archaeological finds, tools, and reconstructed dwelling structures from Bronze Age communities.
The pile dwellings were found in 1929 when a temporary drop in the lake level, caused by the construction of a hydroelectric plant at Riva del Garda, exposed the wooden posts. Excavations were interrupted when the water rose again, then resumed during the drought of 1937–1938 under the superintendency and the University of Verona. The museum itself was built from 1968 and opened on 24 September 1972.
The museum reveals how prehistoric communities adapted their construction methods to waterside living along the lake. Building homes on posts over water was a practical response to the local environment.
The museum is easily accessible and features informational displays explaining the exhibits on view. Visitors can explore the reconstructed houses on wooden platforms and gain direct insights into Bronze Age living conditions.
Among the finds are amber beads from the Baltic region, evidence of exchange networks reaching Ledro about 4,000 years ago. The museum also keeps a woven belt band from the Middle Bronze Age, a type not known from other sites, and a dugout canoe recovered in 1967.
