Palazzo degli Uffici, Rationalist office building in EUR district, Rome, Italy
Palazzo degli Uffici is a rationalist building in the EUR district of Rome, with a symmetrical white marble facade and large windows running along its exterior. It serves today as the headquarters of EUR S.p.A., the company that manages the entire EUR area.
Architect Gaetano Minnucci completed this building in 1939 as the first permanent structure of the planned district for the 1942 World Exhibition. The exhibition never took place, but the area was developed further and inhabited after the war.
The entrance is marked by a large bas-relief by Publio Morbiducci showing scenes from Rome's long history as a builder. The work gives a sense of how deeply the city drew on its own past when shaping new public spaces.
The building is in active use as an administrative office, so interior access is generally not available to visitors, but the facade and entrance area can be seen from the street. Coming on a weekday morning tends to allow a quieter look at the exterior.
Beneath the building lies an intact reinforced concrete air-raid shelter that was built separately from the main structure. This hidden space has never been open to the public and remains largely unknown to most visitors.
