Porta delle Lame features two distinct drawbridges integrated into its structure, with one designated for carriages and another for pedestrian access.
The original gate constructed in 1334 underwent a complete reconstruction in 1677 by architect Agostino Barelli, who transformed it into a Baroque style structure.
Bronze statues near the gate commemorate the resistance fighters who engaged in combat at this location during a significant battle on November 7, 1944.
The gate stands at the intersection of Via Lame and Via Zanardi, providing access to central Bologna through the medieval city walls.
Between 2007 and 2009, the gate received extensive restoration work to preserve its architectural elements and structural integrity for future generations.
