Porta San Felice

Porta San Felice, Medieval city gate in Bologna, Italy.

Porta San Felice is a fortified gate with a central tower that marks the western boundary of Bologna's ancient walls. The structure connects the historic city center with the newer neighborhoods that spread westward beyond the original fortifications.

The gate was first built around 1250 and then substantially rebuilt in 1334 to strengthen the city's defenses. Subsequent modifications followed over the coming centuries as Bologna evolved and adjusted its fortifications.

The gate marked the transition point between the walled city and the neighborhoods that grew beyond its limits. You can still sense how medieval Bologna gave way to the modern city that extends outward from here.

The gate sits at the intersection of Via San Felice and Via Aurelio Saffi and is easily reached on foot from the city center. It serves as a good starting point for exploring the western neighborhoods or walking along the path of the former city walls.

The gate retains its original crenellated tower, which served as a visible defensive feature. At this location, the Via Emilia changes its street name, revealing how important this spot was for ancient transportation routes.
