Riserva naturale Metaponto, State nature reserve in province of Matera, Italy.
Riserva naturale Metaponto is a state nature reserve located along the Ionian coast between the Bradano and Basento rivers, encompassing wetlands, dunes, and Mediterranean forests across about 240 hectares. The land contains distinct zones with varied vegetation and wildlife habitats that support numerous species throughout the year.
The forest area originated from reforestation initiatives that began in 1934 through the Reclamation Consortium and continued until 1954 under the State Forestry Corps. These restoration efforts transformed the landscape and established the ecological foundation the reserve maintains today.
The reserve holds traces of ancient Greek settlements visible near the Temple of Apollo, connecting visitors to civilizations that once thrived on this coast. Walking through the landscape, you encounter both the natural environment and archaeological remains that tell stories of the past.
The site is best explored on foot using marked paths that wind through the various habitats. Early morning visits are recommended for observing wildlife and avoiding heat, especially during warmer months.
The reserve contains two separate wetland zones that function as distinct habitats for both nesting and migratory birds passing through seasonally. This dual structure gives the area special importance within the European Natura 2000 network across the region.
