Torre Mattoni

Torre Mattoni is a square stone watchtower standing near Lake Salinella in Marina di Ginosa, built with thick walls and observation points typical of 16th-century coastal defenses. The structure displays the solid stonework and clear sight lines characteristic of fortifications designed to monitor the waters below.

The tower was built during the 1500s as part of a chain of coastal fortifications designed to defend the Ionian coast against Turkish raids. This defensive line played a central role in protecting Apulian settlements during a tumultuous period of Mediterranean history.

The tower served as a crucial lookout point for coastal communities and shaped how people organized their settlements along this stretch of shore. Today the structure stands as a reminder of the era when local populations built their homes with such defensive posts in mind.
