Metapontum

Metapontum is an ancient Greek settlement on a flat plain between two rivers, with ruins of temples, a marketplace, and a theater area. The excavated structures show how a typical Greek colony was organized with its public and religious spaces.

Greek settlers founded this site in the 7th century BC and developed it into a thriving port city. The Romans later took control of the region and integrated the city into their expanding empire.

The temple with its Doric columns shows how Greeks practiced their architectural traditions and honored their gods in this colonial setting. The layout reflects how important this site was for religious ceremonies and public gatherings of the community.

The site lies on open ground with little shade, so sun protection and water are important for your visit. The uneven ground between the ruins requires sturdy footwear for safe walking.

The mathematician Pythagoras spent his final years at this location and left a lasting intellectual mark on the place. His presence made the grounds a center for philosophy and learning in the ancient world.
