Riserva naturale Tombolo di Cecina

The Tombolo di Cecina reserve is a protected coastal area in Tuscany with pine forests and sandy dunes. Visitors can walk, cycle, or ride horses on paths that wind through both the northern and southern sections of this natural space.

A Tuscan Grand Duke ordered pine forests planted in the middle of the 1800s to protect farmland from sea winds and salt spray. This original land-saving effort later became the protected natural area we see today.

The reserve functions as an educational space where visitors learn about Mediterranean ecosystems through designated nature trails and informative displays.

The area is open to walkers, cyclists, and riders on most days, with clear paths on both sides of the coast. It works best to visit on quieter weekdays when the trails are less crowded.

The reserve houses multiple pine species including domestic, Aleppo, and maritime varieties, alongside populations of wild rabbits, foxes, and porcupines.
