Rifugio Alpetto, Mountain hut in Oncino, Italy
Rifugio Alpetto is a mountain hut positioned at 2268 meters elevation with restaurant areas, sleeping quarters for 24 people, and facilities including hot showers. It serves as a base for day hikes and longer climbing expeditions in the surrounding high-altitude terrain.
The shelter opened in 1998 and underwent major renovations before reopening in 2022 under management by the Casassa brothers and the CAI Cavour section. This modernization project updated the building while preserving its role as a mountaineering hub.
The adjacent museum displays photographs and documents that reveal how climbing traditions developed in this region over many generations of mountain exploration.
The route to the hut takes about two hours from the Meire Dacant parking area near Rocche Bianche, involving roughly 600 meters of elevation gain. The terrain is steep and exposed in sections, so visitors should wear proper mountain boots and come prepared for sustained climbing.
The winter shelter uses prefabricated steel components combined with wooden finishes, providing eight beds for cold-season mountaineers. This construction approach allows the structure to withstand extreme snow loads and harsh conditions typical at this elevation.
