Rifugio Luigi Zacchi, Mountain refuge in Tarvisio, Italy
Rifugio Luigi Zacchi sits at 1,380 meters elevation beneath the west wall of Ponza Grande, framed by the peaks of Mount Ponze, Veunza, and Mangart. The shelter accommodates twenty guests across three rooms and serves as a resting point for hikers exploring the surrounding alpine terrain.
Built in 1947 following World War II, the shelter was named after Luigi Zacchi. It developed into an important resting point for travelers exploring the remote northeastern border region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
The refuge kitchen serves regional Friuli dishes like Frico, a baked cheese specialty, and venison stew with polenta. These traditional meals are enjoyed by hikers who come to rest after time in the mountains.
Visitors need to bring personal towels and sleeping bags, as these are not provided by the shelter. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the mountain paths are most accessible and the weather remains stable.
The shelter operates a Finnish sauna on weekends from noon to 8 PM, an unexpected comfort at this elevation. This rare amenity makes the experience refreshing after a day spent in the mountains.
