San Martino della Battaglia, village in Desenzano del Garda
San Martino della Battaglia is a hamlet within Desenzano del Garda featuring quiet streets, historic buildings, and surrounding green fields near the lake. The site includes a neogothic tower completed in the early 1890s, a museum displaying battle artifacts and documents, and an ossuary housing the remains of over two thousand soldiers.
A major battle took place here in June 1859 between Austrian forces and the armies of Sardinia and France, resulting in victory for the Italian side. This engagement marked a turning point in Italy's path toward unification and has been commemorated since 1870 through the ossuary and the tower built in 1893.
The name comes from the Church of San Martino, which was transformed into a memorial site for fallen soldiers after 1870. Residents and visitors gather in Piazza della Concordia to reflect on the sacrifices made during the unification struggle.
The location is easily reached by car or bus and has ample parking available for visitors. The tower can be climbed to enjoy panoramic views of the landscape and lake, while the museum and ossuary are accessible during daylight hours.
The Church of San Donino, one of the oldest structures in the area dating to around 1280, features thick walls and small windows reflecting its solid, enduring character. Nearby cascine, traditional farmhouses such as Casina Corbú and Casina Bonera, still tell stories of generations of rural life.
