Castello, Medieval castle in Desenzano del Garda, Italy.
Castello is a medieval fortress set on a hill above Lake Garda in Desenzano del Garda, enclosed by circular walls with four defensive towers. Inside the walls, the remains of residential buildings and a small church are still visible, forming what was once a self-contained walled settlement.
The fortress was built around the year 1000 on the remains of a Roman military outpost, at a time when Hungarian raids threatened the region. Over the following centuries, the site gradually lost its defensive purpose and fell into disuse.
The name Castello simply means "castle" in Italian, which reflects the site's original purpose as a place of refuge for the people living below the hill. Today, visitors walking inside the walls can still see the foundations of the houses where those residents once lived side by side.
The fortress is reached on foot from the town center, so comfortable shoes are a good idea for the uphill walk. Once inside, climbing to the upper walls or the tallest tower gives a clear view over Lake Garda.
At its peak, the walled enclosure housed around 120 dwellings, making it more like a small village than a traditional fort. The church inside the walls meant that residents could go about their daily lives without ever needing to leave the fortified perimeter.
