San Giovanni Battista

San Giovanni Battista is a Baroque church in Lonato del Garda with a two-tiered facade decorated with columns, statues of Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint Barbara, and topped by a golden statue. The interior is dominated by an eight-sail dome, and the marble floor displays patterns in white and red Verona stone.

The original San Zeno church was destroyed in 1339, prompting the community to build this new structure dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Over the centuries, the building received its distinctive Baroque design and was later recognized as a minor basilica.

The basilica houses 13 side altars decorated with Venetian artworks, including Giambettino Cignaroli's painting of the Preaching of Saint John the Baptist. These artistic treasures show the work of regional masters that visitors encounter as they walk through the interior.

The building serves as the parish church with regular religious services and community gatherings throughout the year. Visitors should know that access may be restricted during Mass times, and modest dress is expected.

The marble floor was relaid in 1979 during a renovation with intricate patterns in white and red Verona stone. This floor decoration is one of the most striking details inside and deserves attention as you walk through.
