Rifugio Porta Franca, Mountain hut in Orsigna, Italy
Rifugio Porta Franca is a mountain hut located at 1,580 meters (5,184 feet) elevation in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and provides shelter for hikers traversing mountain trails. The facility contains 24 beds, common rooms, kitchen amenities, basic services, and a permanently available bivouac shelter.
The refuge was founded in 1940 by CAI Pistoia and has since provided shelter to generations of hikers crossing the Apennine range. Its creation reflects the growth of organized mountaineering in Italy during that era.
The refuge serves as a gathering place where hikers exchange stories and connect with local mountain customs and regional food during their journeys. Visitors experience how people naturally come together in these high places to share their experiences and discover the mountain way of life.
The refuge operates on weekends from May through October, making it accessible along main hiking routes during these months. Plan to bring warm layers even during warmer seasons, as mountain weather can be cool and change quickly at this elevation.
Trail number 5 from here leads to Monte Gennaio and connects with Sentiero Italia, a national long-distance hiking route that many visitors overlook. This link makes the shelter a key junction in a wider network of mountain paths.
