Rifugio Sorgenti del Piave, Mountain hut in Sappada, Italy
Rifugio Sorgenti del Piave is a stone mountain shelter located at 1830 meters elevation in Val Sesis, positioned right at the source of the Piave River as it flows from Monte Peralba. The refuge provides twenty beds for overnight guests and outdoor seating for those passing through during the day.
The site held strategic importance during World War I, and a Peace Flame monument was installed in 2015 to commemorate this chapter of Alpine military history.
The family-run operation serves regional mountain dishes like canederli and homemade apple strudel, reflecting the food traditions of this Alpine valley.
Access is available from June through September when the shelter operates fully with overnight lodging available. Visitors should be prepared for the high elevation and mountain terrain, as weather can change rapidly.
The Piave River spring emerges directly in front of the refuge, marked by a stone plaque inscribed with 'Qui nasce il Piave'. This source location makes it a memorable stop for those tracing the river from its beginning to the sea.
