Teatro Verdi, Municipal theatre in San Severo, Italy.
Teatro Verdi is a neoclassical theatre in the center of San Severo, a town in the Foggia province of Apulia. The building has a trapezoidal layout and is topped by a large dome modeled on the Roman Pantheon.
The building was designed by architect Cesare Bazzani and opened in 1937 under the name Teatro Comunale del Littorio, with a performance of the opera Andrea Chénier. After World War II, it was renamed Teatro Verdi in honor of Italy's most celebrated opera composer.
The theatre is the main venue for opera and theatre in San Severo, drawing audiences from across the region throughout the season. The tiered box seating and the painted ceiling give the auditorium the feel of a classic Italian opera house.
The theatre is in the center of San Severo and easy to reach on foot from most of the town. The season runs mainly in the winter months, so it is worth checking the programme ahead of your visit.
A Murano crystal chandelier made by the Venini glassworks in 1935 hangs from the central dome and is often the first thing visitors notice when they walk into the auditorium. Venini is one of the most respected glassworks in Venice, known for collaborating with leading artists and designers of the 20th century.
