Torre dei Caduti, Memorial tower in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Bergamo, Italy
The Torre dei Caduti is a memorial tower on Piazza Vittorio Veneto in Bergamo rising around 45 meters high. The sandstone structure features a large clock decorated with wind allegories and bronze sculptures, with interior floors displaying engraved names.
Construction started in 1922 under architect Marcello Piacentini and opened in 1924. The memorial was built as a response to First World War losses and has shaped Bergamo's identity since then.
The name means Tower of the Fallen, referring to those whose names are carved into the monument. The inscriptions shape how visitors experience the square as a place of remembrance for Bergamo's losses.
The tower stands at the start of Sentierone, about 750 meters from Bergamo railway station and near the bus stop on Viale Roma. The plaza is easily accessible on foot and sits in the heart of the city center.
Inside stands a bronze statue of Italia Vittoriosa holding a sword, with cherubs supporting Bergamo's coat of arms in a window niche. This sculptural group is often overlooked by visitors since it is not immediately visible from outside.
