Rocca di Monte Poggiolo, Medieval fortress in Castrocaro Terme e Terra del Sole, Italy
Rocca di Monte Poggiolo is a medieval fortress in Castrocaro Terme e Terra del Sole with a perimeter wall of about 146 meters and four round towers. The main tower rises about 18 meters and defines the structure's outline.
The fortress originated in the medieval period but underwent a major redesign in 1471 under Florentine architect Giuliano da Maiano. This renovation shaped the structure visible today.
The fortress displays military features from the 15th century that remain visible today: narrow patrol passages, reinforced chambers, and command residences. These elements reveal how people defended the territory and organized life within the walls.
The fortress is located about 3 kilometers from Terra del Sole and is currently accessible for external viewing only. You can walk around the exterior to see the structure and towers from different angles.
The fortress contains a remarkable medieval water system with two underground chambers that filtered and processed rainwater. This hidden network shows how carefully the infrastructure was planned for running a fortified settlement.
