Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi, Mountain refuge in Campo Imperatore, Italy
Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi is a mountain hut on the Portella ridge in Gran Sasso National Park, sitting at about 2,388 meters (7,835 feet), close to Corno Grande. It offers basic accommodation and meals for hikers and climbers exploring the peaks around Campo Imperatore.
The Italian Alpine Club of Rome built this shelter in 1908, making it one of the earliest refuges in the Gran Sasso range. In the years that followed, it became a starting point for climbers heading toward the highest summits of the Apennines.
This refuge serves as a gathering place for mountaineers and hikers exploring the high peaks and trails throughout the Apennine range. People from different regions meet here to share their mountain experiences and knowledge of the terrain.
The hut is generally open from June to September and can be reached on foot from Campo Imperatore in about 40 minutes. Those coming from Prati di Tivo should plan for a much longer walk, so setting out early in the day is a good idea.
The name honors Luigi Amedeo di Savoia, Duke of the Abruzzi, who was one of the most respected mountaineers and explorers of his era. He led expeditions to the Arctic and to the Ruwenzori mountains in Africa, giving this high-altitude hut an unexpected connection to distant places.
