Riserva Naturale Del Meisino

Riserva Naturale Del Meisino, Protected area at Po River confluence in Turin and San Mauro Torinese, Italy.

Description

Riserva Naturale del Meisino is a protected area spanning roughly 245 hectares of wetlands and riverbanks along the Po River, where the Stura di Lanzo and Dora Riparia rivers converge. The site stretches between Turin and San Mauro Torinese and features floodplain forests, reed beds, and open water channels.

History

The area underwent significant changes in 1952 with construction of a stone embankment to control Po River flooding, reshaping the site's structure and water flow. Bertolla Island emerged in 1953 following construction of the Pascolo Dam and became a critical nesting site for the local heron population.

Culture

The area serves as a refuge where birds and other wildlife thrive openly, and visitors come to observe nature and learn about wetland ecosystems. People spend time here watching herons, ducks, and other water birds in their natural surroundings.

Practical

The reserve features walking and cycling paths for exploring the grounds, along with sports facilities available for various activities. It is advisable to arrive early to take advantage of the best bird watching times and experience the area at a relaxed pace.

Did you know?

Bertolla Island holds the only urban heron colony in Italy, showing how wildlife thrives in river areas alongside human activity. Many visitors miss this colony while exploring the paths, even though it ranks among the reserve's most valuable features.
