Scala Santa, Campli, Religious pilgrimage site in Campli, Italy

Scala Santa in Campli is a sanctuary with 28 oak steps ascending to the Sancta Sanctorum chapel. Inside are statues of Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows, along with reliquaries holding fragments of the True Cross.

The site was recognized in 1772 by Pope Clement XIV as spiritually equivalent to the Holy Stairs at the Lateran Palace in Rome. This papal recognition elevated the structure to a major pilgrimage destination with equal holy standing.

Visitors observe the long-standing practice of pilgrims ascending the steps on their knees while praying, honoring the suffering of Jesus. This ritual ties personal devotion directly to the spiritual life of the community.

The site is centrally located in Campli and easily accessible on foot for most visitors. Wearing comfortable shoes is advisable, especially if you plan to climb the steps.

The ceiling above the steps displays detailed paintings of angels and symbols of the Passion that accompany the ascent. Neapolitan reliquaries placed throughout the chapel hold fragments of the True Cross, deepening the spiritual weight of the space.
