Castello di Santa Lucia del Mela

Castello di Santa Lucia del Mela is a stone fortress on Mount Mankarru featuring a cylindrical tower and underground chambers overlooking the Floripotema and Mela rivers. The structure was later transformed into a religious sanctuary, blending both defensive and spiritual functions.

Construction of the fortress began in the 9th century and was later modified by Frederick II of Swabia, who used it during mountain hunting expeditions. In 1673, it was transformed into a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

The site is devoted to the cult of Madonna della Neve, visible in the marble statues of Saint Lucia and Saint Blaise that visitors encounter inside. This religious devotion shapes how the place looks and functions today.

Visitors can explore the site through guided tours offered throughout the year and can participate in spiritual retreats. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, as the climb to the mountaintop is steep and the underground areas require careful navigation.

The castle library holds a collection of ancient texts, including incunabula and books from the 16th century that document regional history. These literary treasures offer insights into the area's cultural and intellectual past.
