Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church is a Mannerist building with three naves separated by columns and side chapels along the walls. The stone entrance features linear carvings, while a copper-clad bulbous dome rises above the apse at the far end.

The church was consecrated in 1583, marking the completion of a sanctuary for monks who had brought their order to Sicily centuries earlier. The building rose during the late Renaissance period and reflects that era's architectural influences.

The wooden Madonna del Carmine statue is carried through the streets in an annual July procession that draws crowds of devoted worshippers. This celebration holds deep meaning for the local community and shows how important Mary's protection is to people here.

The building sits in the Serro del Carmine district and is accessible from the main road through the neighborhood. The interior is spacious and open, making it easy to walk through and see all the chapels and architectural details.

After a local battle, the building served as a military hospital before being converted into a civilian hospital. This practical use lasted until the mid-1800s, when it returned to its original religious purpose.
