Dôme de Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto

The Dome of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto is a neoclassical basilica built during the 1930s, featuring a large central dome with eight windows and decorative details representing the four Evangelists. It stands as the primary religious building in the town and one of the most important churches in the region.

The current building was started in 1932 after an earlier church from 1606 was severely damaged by the 1908 earthquake. The reconstruction under engineer Francesco Barbaro represented a major effort to restore the community after this disaster.

Three bronze doors at the entrance show scenes from the life of Saint Sebastian, made by different artists during the late 1900s. These works reflect the deep devotion that local people have for this saint.

The basilica sits in Piazza Duomo facing Via Roma, placing it at the town center and making it easy to locate. The site is walkable and welcomes visitors during regular opening hours.

Devotees follow a local custom of throwing chickpeas at the statue of Saint Sebastian as a way to express their religious commitment. This unusual ritual demonstrates how the community shows its spiritual connection in a distinctive manner.
