Mausoleum of Maxentius, Ancient imperial mausoleum on Appian Way, Rome, Italy
The circular structure features a central octagonal pillar surrounded by a seven-meter-wide vaulted corridor containing niches for sarcophagi placement.
Emperor Maxentius constructed this family tomb between 306 and 312 AD, making it the final resting place of his son Valerius Romulus.
The mausoleum location follows Roman burial traditions requiring all bodies to be interred outside city limits, near several catacombs.
The archaeological site opens its doors through the Aperti per Voi project, with volunteers guiding visitors through the ancient structure.
The underground floor remains intact, measuring 35 meters in diameter, though the original two-story rotunda no longer stands.
