Duke Francesco III d'Este commissioned architect Pietro Termanini to construct this building in 1764, initially serving as a shelter for impoverished citizens of Modena.
The palace houses the Estense Library, which preserves medieval manuscripts, including the Borso d'Este Bible and documents illustrating Columbus's voyages from 1502.
Visitors can access multiple cultural institutions under one roof, including the Estense Gallery, Municipal Archives, and Roman Lapidary Museum with free admission.
The Historical Municipal Archives contain documents dating back to 969, making it one of northern Italy's most extensive collections of medieval manuscripts.
