Duke Francesco IV of Austria-Este established this museum in 1828 as the first public institution in Modena, following models from Verona and Vatican museums.
The collection features Roman honorary bases, public inscriptions, dedications to deities, and decorated sarcophagi that document the evolution of Modena from ancient times.
Located at Largo Porta Sant'Agostino, the museum operates from Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, with multilingual tablet guides available.
The museum preserves memorial stones of Modena's notable citizens, including nobles, lawyers, doctors, and artists from the seventh through nineteenth centuries.
