Torre del Galgario

Torre del Galgario is a cylindrical defensive structure in Bergamo with walls that taper toward the top and are built from sandstone throughout. Small openings punctuate the tower's height, and it stands as part of the city's medieval fortification network.

The tower was built in the 12th century as part of Bergamo's Muraine fortification system, which protected the city with multiple round and square towers. This defensive network formed one of the city's most important protection structures.

Locals affectionately call this tower 'Ol Biril', meaning 'the pin' in Bergamo dialect, and it serves as a familiar landmark where people meet and gather. The structure has become part of the city's everyday landscape and local identity.

The tower is located at a road intersection in lower Bergamo near Via Frizzoni and the Montelungo military barracks. Visit during daylight hours to get the best views of its sandstone details and overall form.

The tower served as a gunpowder and ammunition storage facility for decades, which explains its robust cylindrical design built to withstand pressure. This military function is no longer visible today, but it reveals how the structure adapted its role over time.
