The tower was constructed in the 12th century as part of the Muraine fortification system, which included 31 square towers and two round towers protecting Bergamo.
Local residents refer to the tower as 'Ol Biril' meaning 'the pin' in the Bergamo dialect, making it a common meeting point in the city.
The tower is located at the intersection of multiple road routes near Via Frizzoni, next to the Montelungo military barracks in lower Bergamo.
The structure served as a gunpowder storage facility for decades, with its name derived from its proximity to the limestone-rich Serio Grande and Morla waterways.
