Casa natale di Gaetano Donizetti
Casa natale di Gaetano Donizetti, Art museum in Bergamo, Italy.
The birthplace of Gaetano Donizetti is a palazzo with five stories, four visible from Via Borgo Canale and five from Via degli Orti at the rear. The building now functions as a museum displaying exhibits about the composer's life and the musical world of his era.
The Municipality of Bergamo acquired the building in 1925 and it received national monument status in 1926. The house opened to the public as a museum in 2009.
The ground floor displays the connection between Donizetti and his teacher Simon Mayr, whose guidance shaped the young composer's musical education. Visitors can observe how this relationship influenced his artistic path.
The museum welcomes visitors on Sundays, and weekday visits can be arranged by scheduling special appointments from Monday to Friday. It is helpful to contact ahead to confirm access before arriving.
The basement area where Donizetti's family originally lived remains unfurnished to show the modest conditions of his childhood. This authentic display gives visitors a direct sense of the simple living conditions the future composer experienced.
