Scoglio Torre della Scuola Lighthouse

The Scoglio Torre della Scuola Lighthouse stands on a metal mast atop a pentagonal tower located near Palmaria Island. The walls are several meters thick, and the structure commands the rocky coastline of this area.

The Senate of the Republic of Genoa ordered construction of this defensive tower in the 17th century to protect the coast. The tower was later converted into a lighthouse and has served maritime navigation since then.

The structure shows the building skill of Genoese military engineers, who combined defense functions with maritime navigation in the Gulf of La Spezia. It represents the connection between protection and guidance that was typical for this coastal region.

The automated lighthouse emits two white flashes every six seconds and remains visible from far away. The system runs on solar power and operates independently, so visitors can explore the coastline safely.

A local official named Ubaldo Mazzini saved the tower from demolition in 1915 and allowed its transformation into a working lighthouse. This bold decision preserved a historical structure that still serves maritime safety today.
