Fosso dell'Eremo delle Carceri

The protected site extends across 64 hectares near Assisi, featuring deep valleys, slopes, and forest vegetation on the western side of Monte Subasio.

The area includes caves that served as retreats for early Christian hermits before Saint Francis and his companions established their presence there in 1205.

The name 'Carceri' originates from the Latin word 'carcer', referring to solitary places suitable for meditation rather than actual prison facilities.

The protected area contains multiple geological formations, natural caves, and pathways that visitors can explore while observing the local flora and fauna.

The site maintains ancient holm oak forests that represent past climatic conditions, surviving due to the limestone substrate and favorable microclimate.
