Portico di San Luca, Religious portico in Colle della Guardia, Bologna, Italy

The Portico di San Luca is a roofed gallery with hundreds of arches that stretches from central Bologna upward to the sanctuary at the hilltop. The structure ascends gradually over a long route, with different sections displaying various architectural details built across several centuries.

Construction began in 1674 under Don Ludovico Genaroli's direction, supported by citizens, guilds, and families who contributed resources over generations. Different master builders worked on separate sections, each bringing their own architectural approach to the expanding structure.

The portico serves as a sacred processional route where pilgrims and locals make their way to the sanctuary throughout the year. The covered passage creates a spiritual space that connects the city below to the religious site above, reflecting how the community values this physical and spiritual link.

Walking the entire route is possible in one day but requires stamina due to the continuous uphill slope during the second half. Comfortable footwear and water are essential, and it is wise to start early to ensure you have adequate daylight for the entire journey.

This structure ranks among the longest covered passageways in the world and displays multiple building styles side by side. This blend of periods and architectural hands makes it possible to observe the evolution of design while taking a single walk.
