Lago di Gerosa, bacino idrico artificiale in Italia centrale
Lago di Gerosa is a reservoir in the Apennines, sitting at roughly 650 meters above sea level and fed by the Aso River. It spans the territory of three municipalities: Comunanza, Montefortino, and Montemonaco.
The reservoir was built in the 1980s, when a dam was completed across the Aso River valley and the water gradually filled the basin. The land that was flooded had previously been inhabited and farmed.
The lake was created in the 1980s as an artificial basin and now marks a boundary between three municipalities. Its water serves the local community for drinking supply and aerial firefighting operations, making it integral to daily life in the region.
A road from Comunanza passes through the forest and leads directly to the lake, where walking paths and boating options are available along the shore. Restaurants and small places to stay can be found nearby.
Old trees and building remains from the flooded valley still lie beneath the surface of the water. When the water level drops, faint traces of this submerged landscape can sometimes be seen.
