Rifugio Alto Matanna, Mountain hut in Alpi Apuane, Italy
Rifugio Alto Matanna is a mountain hut located in the Alpi Apuane range at approximately 1,000 meters elevation. It accommodates around 30 guests and sits beneath the Callare di Matanna pass in the borderland between Tuscany and the surrounding regions.
The refuge was founded in 1894 as Rifugio-Osteria ai prati di Pian d'Orsina. It became the founding location of the Lucca section of the Italian Alpine Club in 1923.
The refuge serves as a meeting point for hikers exploring the surrounding peaks and valleys. It connects communities of mountain lovers who share knowledge about the trails and the land.
Access to the refuge is via a road from Lucca passing through the Valle del Serchio valley and small villages. Plan your route carefully, as the terrain is mountainous and weather conditions can change quickly.
The Barsi family, early managers of the refuge, constructed a cable car in 1910 connecting Grotta all'Onda to Foce del Pallone. This engineering project reveals how mountain pioneers adapted to the difficult terrain.
