Izumi is a coastal city in northwestern Kagoshima Prefecture situated between the Yatsushiro Sea and the Hisatsu Mountains. The city stretches across terrain that moves from shoreline to forested hills, creating varied landscapes within its borders.
The region was part of Satsuma Province during the Edo Period and underwent several mergers beginning in April 1954. These unions brought together different communities and established the city as it exists today.

The city is well connected by the Kyushu Shinkansen train line and the Minamikyushu Expressway to major regional destinations. These transportation options make visiting straightforward and allow easy exploration of nearby areas.
From October through December, over 10,000 migrating cranes from Siberia arrive at designated grounds within the city. This natural occurrence is recognized as a national natural monument due to its ecological importance.
