Akashi, Core city in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan
Akashi is a core city in Hyōgo Prefecture on the southern coast of Honshū, running along the shore of the Seto Inland Sea. The harbor sits at the center while residential neighborhoods and shopping streets spread toward the gentle hills to the north.
A feudal lord built a castle here in the early 17th century, turning the town into an important stop along the old overland road. The compound served as a control point for travelers between Kyōto and the western part of the island.
The name refers to the narrow strait between Honshū and Awaji Island just off the coast. Fishermen sell their catch directly at the harbor while small restaurants in the old town streets serve fresh tako.
The city is easy to explore on foot as most points of interest are within walking distance from the train station. The market hall is especially busy in the morning when fresh fish from the night arrives.
The prime meridian for Japanese time runs through the city and is marked with a brass line in the pavement. The planetarium at this spot shows visitors the exact position of the longitude coordinate.
